Moped accident: the right reflexes
⏱️ 3 min read
Whether you are involved or just a witness, you have legal obligations in the event of an accident. The method fits in three words — Protect, Alert, Assist — always in that order. And on two wheels, there is one extra rule the exam loves: you never remove an injured person's helmet.
✨ Key takeaways
- The order is fixed: Protect, Alert (112), Assist.
- You never remove an injured person's helmet, and you only move an injured person in the case of immediate danger.
- Material damage only: European accident report form filled in at the scene.
- Stopping and identifying yourself is compulsory: fleeing = hit-and-run, even with no one injured.
- Your moped must be insured (third-party liability) and registered: that is the data you exchange after a collision.
1. Protect: prevent a secondary accident
First of all, secure the scene so a second collision cannot happen: get clear of the traffic, warn other road users of the accident and, if it can be done safely, clear the carriageway (a moped is easy to push to the side) and switch off the ignition of the damaged vehicles.
2. Alert: call 112
If anyone is injured, call 112 (the European emergency number, free of charge, reachable from any phone). For the police only: 101. Give the exact location, the number of injured people and their condition, then never hang up first — the operator ends the call. The 112 BE app automatically sends your position to the emergency services.
3. Assist without making things worse
- Never move an injured person, except in the case of immediate danger (fire, risk of explosion).
- Never remove the helmet of an injured two-wheeler rider: a clumsy move can make a spinal injury worse. Leave it to the emergency services.
- Talk to the victim, keep them covered, and press on a heavily bleeding wound with a clean cloth.
Material damage only: the accident report form
No one injured? The drivers fill in the European accident report form together: location, sketch, contact details, insurance data. Your moped must be covered by third-party liability insurance and carry its registration plate — that is the data you exchange. Signing does not mean admitting fault: the form describes the facts for the insurers. If you disagree, take photos and call the police.
Staying at the scene: compulsory
Every driver involved must stop, stay at the scene and identify themselves, even if they believe they are in the right and even for a simple scratch. Driving off without doing so = hit-and-run, a serious offence punished with heavy fines and a possible driving ban. You clip the mirror of a parked car whose owner is absent? Leave a note with your name and number — otherwise, that is also a hit-and-run.
A moped rider is on the ground, unconscious but breathing. Your first move?
❓ Frequently asked questions
Do I need to carry a warning triangle on my moped?
The obligation to carry a warning triangle applies to cars; in principle it is not imposed on mopeds. In the event of an accident, warn others of the danger by any available means and get clear of the traffic.
What does a minor risk in the event of a hit-and-run?
Hit-and-run remains a serious offence, whatever the driver's age. Stopping, staying at the scene and identifying yourself is always compulsory — it is also the condition for the insurance to play its role properly.
