Frequently asked questions

The Belgian theory exam, in practice

Can I take the Belgian driving theory exam in English?

The official exam is taken in French, Dutch or German. Depending on the region, some exam centres offer special sessions with a sworn interpreter — check with your centre. Studying in English first makes the rules and the vocabulary much easier to master before you sit the exam.

How does the category B theory exam work in Belgium?

The exam takes place on a computer in an approved exam centre: 50 multiple-choice questions, with about 15 seconds to answer each question once it has been read out. You need at least 41 points out of 50 to pass.

How many mistakes are allowed on the theory exam?

Each minor fault costs 1 point and each serious fault (a 3rd- or 4th-degree offence, or speeding) costs 5 points. Two serious faults mean an automatic fail, even with 41/50. So you can lose at most 9 penalty points and make at most one serious fault.

How old do I need to be to sit the theory exam?

From age 17 for the category B licence. The pass certificate stays valid for 3 years to apply for the provisional driving licence.

What happens after failing the theory exam twice?

After two fails, you must follow 12 hours of theory lessons at an approved driving school before you can sit the exam again.

Can I practise for the theory exam for free?

Yes: on this page you can start a free 50-question mock exam without creating an account, read the free revision summary and follow the theory course. Full access (1,698 questions, unlimited mock exams) costs 4 € for 4 days.
